Training in the Kim lab

Dr. Kim has spent considerable effort in his professional life training the next generation of scientists. In the past 25 years at Stanford, Kim has trained 14 PhD students, 3 Masters of Science students, 36 postdoctoral fellows, >600 high school students, and 29 undergraduates in his research group. His group has a strong track record of career achievement in its graduates. 9 previous technicians from the Kim laboratory have entered MD/PhD, PhD or MD programs. Of 16 PhD or MS students, 9 remain in training and 3 hold assistant professor positions at Stanford. A total of 16 trainees from the Kim lab held or now hold assistant, associate or full professorships in academic institutions including UCSF (1), Stanford (3), University of Umeå (1), University of Texas Health Sciences Center, San Antonio (1), University of Texas at Southwestern (2), Icahn Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York (2), University of Pennsylvania (2), Johns Hopkins University (1), NIH (1), University of Tokyo (1), and the University of Kobe (1) in Japan. Several others lead biomedical research teams in industry. This includes six graduates who obtained staff scientist positions in highly competitive industrial research settings focused on therapeutics (Amgen, Gilead, Recursion Pharmaceuticals, Calico, Refuge Biotechnology, Hepatx). Others have positions in biotechnology patent law firms and science policy positions, including at Stanford University. Thus, training in the Kim lab has successfully prepared students for research-oriented careers.

Beyond mentoring students and postdocs in his own lab, Dr. Kim also has significant roles in teaching and education in the broader scientific community. Examples include directing or co-directing the NIH-funded Stanford Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) for fourteen years (from 2000-2013). This included efforts to foster diversity, including increased inclusion of women and underrepresented groups in medicine and science, through work and attendance at meetings with organizations like ABRCMS and SACNAS. In his current role as director of the NIH P30-supported Stanford Diabetes Research Center he has continued to foster trainee development, including providing a preferential option to support junior investigators and women. Kim has directed a heralded grant-writing course since 2008 for graduate and medical students (DBIO234). This course focuses on the craft of grant writing, but includes frank discussions of ethical issues in design, conduct, proposals, and execution of scientific research. Based on these efforts, Kim has garnered multiple teaching awards and citations at Stanford, including The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation Award for Excellence in Preclinical Teaching, eleven Citations of Excellence in Teaching from the Committee on Courses and Clerkships, Stanford University Medical School, and two Excellence in Mentoring and Service Award from the Stanford Biosciences Program, Office of Graduate Education (2015, 2021). In addition, he served from 2002 to 2014 on the Dean’s Committee on Faculty Diversity.
